On Friday, September 18/09, Roland School hosted the Summer Bear Dance Troupe. We listened to Barbara Napinak tell stories about the troupe and all the different schools they have travelled to, even Taiwan. She explained about Aboriginal legends and about the Ojibway peoples. They talked about the importance of the drum in their culture. They taught us all how to sing with the drum and some students even played the drum. The drum is the heartbeat of their culture.
The hoop dancer, Josh Hanson, was amazing and we watched as he created animals and flowers with his 18 hoops.
Some students and teachers had the opportunity to try to hoop dance.
At the end of the performance, after we thanked the performers, we had a draw for 4 lucky students to attend the evening performance at Carman Collegiate.
Thank you to the Golden Prairie Arts Council and for all the Summer Bear Dance troupe members.
